Five habits that stop most attacks

Cybercrime headlines make security sound complicated. It mostly isn't. The overwhelming majority of successful attacks would have been stopped by a handful of habits:

  • Verify unusual requests out-of-band. Money, passwords, gift cards, "urgent" favors: confirm through a channel you already trust before acting.
  • Use a unique password for every account, plus MFA. A password manager makes this effortless. MFA on email and banking is non-negotiable.
  • Update everything, automatically. Most malware exploits holes that were patched months earlier. Turn on auto-updates and let them run.
  • Back up what you can't afford to lose. Automatic, tested, with one copy offline or in the cloud. Ransomware can't extort what you can restore.
  • Slow down when something feels urgent. Manufactured panic is the attacker's favorite tool. A five-minute pause defeats it.
